Other Guinness Publications

As well as the Book of Records, Guinness produced, approved or commissioned a large range of other reference publications and advertising (promotional) material. We do not intend to catalogue all such publications here, but we have a few selected books that will probably be of interest to other Guinness collectors. This page details some of our collection, and groups books into sections, rather than by date of publication.

• Guinness Doctors' Books

Guinness record book collectors will know that the special Christmas editions of the Guinness Book of Records produced in 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970 carried on a tradition of sending a Christmas gift to doctor's surgeries every year. As the letter accompanying the 1967 edition notes, "We trust you will enjoy this copy of the Guinness Book of Records. It is taking the place of the familiar Christmas verses you have received in the past".

In fact, Guinness began sending promotional booklets to doctors in 1933, continued the practice up until World War 2, and then resurrected it in 1950. The booklets were produced each year until 1966, after which the Christmas Guinness Book of Records continued the tradition. Every publication from 1933 to 1966 was a high-quality booklet with rhymes, text and cartoons created by some of the top illustrators and writers of the time. All of the booklets were produced by the advertising agency SH Benson, who also produced many of the iconic Guinness advertisements of the period.

Benson sought testimonials from doctors to promote the notion that "Guinness is Good for You". Each booklet in the series was intended to be a limited edition, collectable item, so finding copies in good condition is not too difficult, but they continue to command a high price at auction.

All booklets are 9⅜x6⅛ inches (238x156mm), except where noted below.

• Guinness Time

Guinness also produced a quarterly staff magazine, called "Guinness Time". At least in the early years, each copy of Guinness Time was priced at sixpence and, as well as items of interest to the brewery staff, the magazine recorded items of national interest (for example, the Festival of Britain in the Spring 1952 issue, the death of King George VI in the Spring 1952 issue and the Coronation of the Queen in the Summer 1953 issue).

	The Guinness Time magazines were collected into volumes and bound as hardback books (right). Four magazines (Christmas, Spring, Summer and Autumn) made up each volume. We know of the following bound sets: Volume 1 (1947-1948), Volume 2 (1948-1949), Volume 3 (1949-1950), Volume 4 (1950-1951), Volume 5 (1951-1952) and Volume 6 (1952-1953).

• Guinness "The Records" Series

In 1985, Guinness Superlatives introduced a new series of books, known as "The Records" series. A number of titles were published initially, and the series later morphed into "Records, Facts and Champions" editions. Note that some of the books in this series overlap the "Facts and Feats" series.
